Welcome to the Montserrat Foundation for Charitable Giving

The Montserrat Foundation Inc. is a Non-Profit Company. It is incorporated in the United States of America as a tax-exempt entity to facilitate donations coming from that country.

It was established since 1972 for charitable giving. Local disbursements are made mainly in the areas of:

(a) providing relief of poverty,

(b) advancement of education & religion,

(c) promotion of health,

(d) preservation of antiquities & historic sites, and

(e) protection of the environment.

The Foundation exists to raise funds and to provide support to charitable causes in Montserrat.

The Montserrat Foundation was established by a group of citizens of the United States of America. Public-spirited persons from the Montserrat community were recruited as members. As some of the US members changed their expatriate status, due mainly to aging, the organization is managed predominantly by Montserratians. The last President of the Foundation was D. R. V. (Frank) Edwards OBE OE who was a member from the inception up until 2016, when the current President, Chivone Gerald was elected.

In 1995, the Montserrat Foundation responded to critical needs created by a continuing volcanic eruption causing personal suffering, loss of property, and devastation to the island. This included providing grants to the Montserrat Red Cross, the Montserrat National Trust, the new Golden Years Home for the Elderly, schools and churches, and helping to equip emergency shelters for refugees.

The Montserrat Foundation awarded charitable grants for adult education and the arts.

Management of the Foundation

The Foundation is managed by a Board of Trustees, comprising a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and ordinary Members.

Donations and Gifts to the Montserrat Foundation are welcome in any form and from any quarter. These usually come from endowments – gifts using earnings only; donations specified for an area of interest such as health or education; and gifts to be disbursed at the discretion of the Grants Committee.

Donations have also been made in the form of property in Montserrat.

With the economic downturn in the USA and elsewhere, the finances of the Foundation have dwindled, but the needs have not.
